How to Find Your 1984 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1984 Dodge Background Info

The 1984 Dodge Vibe

1984 was the year Dodge was having a bit of an identity crisis, and I mean that in the best way possible. You had the rugged, square-jawed Pickups and Vans holding down the job site, while the Rampage was trying to convince us it was a truck and a car at the same time. Meanwhile, over in the "Import" corner, the Conquest and Colt were bringing that sleek, high-tech Japanese flair to the showroom floor. With 42 colors in our database for this year, it's clear Dodge wasn't shy. Whether you were rocking Graphic Red on a sporty Omni or Nightwatch Blue on a big B-Series Van, 1984 was a year of bold choices and even bolder sheet metal.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at original 1984 paint, you're looking at the peak of the Single Stage Era. Back then, we didn't hide the color under a plastic-like clear coat; the pigment and the protection were mixed together in one thick, honest layer of acrylic enamel. But here's the rub: that paint is "alive," which means it breathes, and more importantly, it dies. Without a clear shield, the sun treats colors like Graphic Red or Santa Fe Blue Metallic like a buffet, baking the oils right out of the finish. If your Dodge looks like it's been dusted with white flour, that's not dirt-it's oxidation. The paint is literally turning into a chalky powder because it's thirsty for a wax job it probably hasn't had since the Reagan administration.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a '84 survivor, remember that you're dealing with "dead skin." Before you even think about picking up a touch-up brush, you have to get past that chalky oxidation. Use a mild rubbing compound to buff the area until the real color-not the faded ghost of it-shines through. Because this is Single Stage, your buffing pad is going to turn the color of the car (don't panic, that's just the old paint coming off). Once you've applied your repair, here is the Salty Painter's golden rule for 1984: It needs wax or it dies. Without a high-quality carnauba or sealant to act as a sacrificial barrier, the UV rays will be right back to turning your Atlantic Blue Metallic into a dull grey within six months. Feed the paint, seal the pores, and keep it out of the desert sun if you want it to last another forty years.
