How to Find Your 1986 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1986 Dodge Background Info

The 1986 Dodge Vibe

Welcome to 1986, the year Dodge decided to give us a color for every mood and a truck for every job. Whether you were hauling drywall in a Dakota, pretending you were in a Japanese street race with the Conquest, or loading the kids into a Vista Wagon, you had choices. We're talking a massive 54-color database. It was a wild time when "Gunmetal Blue Pearl Metallic" sat on the shelf next to "Misty Rose Pearl Metallic." Dodge was leaning hard into the high-tech metallic and pearl look, trying to shake off the flat, earthy tones of the late '70s with colors like Seychelles Red and Golden Bronze. It was a sophisticated palette for a brand that still knew how to build a Van that could survive a decade of abuse.

Paint Health Check

We've officially entered The Peeling Era. In 1986, the industry was moving fast into basecoat-clearcoat systems, and frankly, the learning curve was steep. If your Dodge has been sitting in the sun, you've likely seen the "Mopar Flake"-that tragic moment when the clear coat starts delaminating and peeling off in sheets like a bad sunburn. Underneath that flaky "potato chip" layer of clear, the Charcoal Gray Metallic or Graphic Red is usually still there, but it's thirsty and unprotected. The biggest enemy here is UV light hitting the factory primer and breaking the bond from the inside out. If your roof or hood looks like it's shedding its skin, you're dealing with classic mid-80s delamination.

Restoration Tip

When you're dealing with 1986 paint, the golden rule is: seal those chips immediately. On these early clear-coat jobs, a tiny rock chip is more than just an eyesore-it's an entry point for moisture and air to get under the clear. Once that lift starts, it's like a hangnail; it's going to keep peeling until the whole panel is naked. Use our solvent-based touch-up to fill the void and lock the edges of the clear coat down. It's the only way to stop the "spread" and keep that Atlantic Blue Metallic looking like it just rolled off the lot in Highland Park.
