How to Find Your 1991 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

1991 Dodge Background Info

The 1991 Dodge Vibe

Welcome to 1991-the year of the high-tech Stealth, the indestructible Ram 50, and the peak of the wood-paneled Caravan's suburban reign. It was an era of "Aero" styling where hard edges were being smoothed out by the wind tunnel, and Dodge was leaning hard into a clean, utilitarian aesthetic. While the factory catalogs were full of teals and magentas, we've focused on the survivors that defined the decade: Black Crystal and Bright White. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the 90s American road, meant to look just as good at the worksite as they did in the mall parking lot.

Paint Health Check

If you're still rocking original paint on a '91, you're likely staring at the "The Peeling Era" in person. By this time, the industry had fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the chemistry hadn't quite figured out how to stay friends with the sun. We call it delamination. On these Dodges, the clear coat tends to give up the ghost, starting as a faint cloudiness before it begins flaking off like a bad sunburn. Once that protective clear layer lifts, the base color underneath is defenseless. If your roof or hood looks like it's shedding skin, you're dealing with the classic 90s clear coat failure.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1991 iron: Seal your chips immediately before the clear lifts. In this era, a rock chip isn't just a cosmetic blemish; it's an entry point for moisture to get under the clear coat and start the peeling process. If you spot a nick in your Bright White or Black Crystal finish, don't wait for the weekend. Clean the spot, dab your touch-up color, and ensure you've got a fresh layer of clear over it. Think of it like a bandage-if you don't seal the edges now, you'll be repainting the whole panel by next summer.
