How to Find Your 2002 Dodge's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

2002 Dodge Background Info

The 2002 Dodge Vibe

Ah, 2002. The year Dodge decided every vehicle needed a grille large enough to swallow a neighborhood cat. Whether you were hauling the soccer team in a Caravan, tearing up the trail in a Dakota or Durango, or pretending your Neon was a race car, Dodge was lean, mean, and very, very silver. Our database tracks 17 colors for this year, and while Bright Silver Metallic and Bright White were the "safe" choices that filled every parking lot, the real legends were wearing Viper Race Yellow or Patriot Blue Pearl. It was a time of transition-bold designs meeting the early-2000s obsession with "high-tech" metallics.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to The Peeling Era. If your 2002 Dodge has spent any significant time under the sun, you've likely noticed the "sunburn" effect. By 2002, the industry was fully committed to the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the factory clear on these Mopars wasn't always a long-term friend. We call it delamination. It starts as a tiny chip or a faint milky haze on the roof or hood, and before you know it, the clear coat is flaking off in sheets like a bad case of lizard skin. Once that clear lifts and exposes the base pigment (like that Atlantic Blue or Flame Red), the color starts to oxidize and disappear fast.

Restoration Tip

If you still have original clear coat left, your number one job is sealing the perimeter. If you see a rock chip, don't "wait until spring" to fix it. In this era of paint, moisture loves to crawl under the edge of a chip and start prying the clear coat away from the color coat. Use a precision applicator to seal those chips immediately to stop the spread. If you're dealing with a metallic like Graphite Grey Pearl, don't try to "heavy-hand" the touch-up. These pearls like to settle; apply two thin layers of color rather than one big glob, or you'll end up with a dark spot that looks like a bruise on your fender.
