How to Find Your Dodge Ram Series's Color Code

Older Dodge paint codes were placed on top of the radiator support, often obscured by engine grease and oil. Later models list them on the drivers door jamb. The typical format is BS/GBS, but only BS is the color code; it can also appear as QBS, PBS, TBS with the first letter as a confusing Year Code. The G in GBS is not part of the color code. BS corresponds to Deep Water Blue Pearl Clearcoat; lately codes are simply listed as BS.

The Color Breakdown

Dodge has a long history of letting their designers have a little too much fun in the paint lab. Over the years, they've recorded a staggering 138 colors for the Ram Series. Whether you're driving a classic Bright White workhorse or you're rolling in something like Squid Ink, Tequila Sunrise Pearl, or Sublime Metallic, it's clear they really went for it. They've given us everything from the deep, sophisticated Delmonico Red to the "look-at-me" Detonator Yellow. Whatever is in your driveway, it's safe to say your truck has a personality.

What to Watch For

Before you start, you need to find your "PNT" code. On most Rams, you'll find this alphanumeric 3-digit code on the driver's side door jamb sticker. If it's not there, pop the hood and check the firewall or the strut tower; sometimes Dodge likes to play hide-and-seek with the labels.

As for the paint itself, Ram trucks are known for their ruggedness, but the paint can sometimes be a bit "social"-meaning it likes to try and leave the party. Keep a close eye on your roof and the leading edge of the hood; these areas are prone to small bubbles or peeling. If you see a tiny chip, catch it early. These trucks use a lot of aluminum in the hoods now, and while they won't rust like steel, they can still develop little pits if left unprotected.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many Ram colors are high-intensity Pearls (like Midnight Blue Pearl or Copperhead Pearl), your biggest secret weapon is a good wrist workout. Shake your touch-up bottle or pen for at least 60 to 90 seconds. Those tiny metallic flakes and pearls love to settle at the bottom, and you need them floating around to get a match that looks right in the sun.

When applying, remember that Dodge paint likes to stay thin. Instead of filling a deep chip with one giant "blob" of paint, apply two or three very thin layers, letting them dry for about 15 minutes in between. It requires a little more patience, but it prevents the paint from sagging and ensures those sparkles sit exactly where they should.
