By 2018, the robots in the factory had become masters of efficiency-meaning they learned exactly how little paint they could spray while still looking like a million bucks. It looks gorgeous under the showroom lights, but out in the real world, it's vulnerable. These cars suffer from what I call "Robot Rash." The clear coat is applied with laser precision, but it's thin. If you look closely at a 488 bumper or an 812 hood, you'll likely see "orange peel"-that wavy texture where the paint didn't quite level out. Worse, the high-speed aerodynamics of these cars turn every pebble into a tiny hammer, and with such a thin layer of protection, those chips go deep fast.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a 2018 Ferrari, you have to respect the layers. This isn't the old days where you could just glob on some lacquer and sand it flat. Because the factory finish is so lean, you want to build your repair slowly. Don't try to fill a rock chip in one heavy pass; the solvent needs to flash off properly so the repair doesn't shrink and leave a "ghost" of the chip later. Use several light dabs, letting them dry in between, until the paint is just slightly higher than the surrounding clear coat. This gives you just enough "meat" to level it off without burning through what little factory clear coat is left nearby.
