How to Find Your 1966 Fleet's Color Code

Fleet is the catch all for individual color codes not associated with any brand or make, full of PPG, Axalta, Sherwin Williams, etc. If only a color code for something to be painted is available, the site can be checked; if it cannot be found, they can be notified and they will see if they can make the paint.

1966 Fleet Background Info

The 1966 Fleet Vibe

Welcome to 1966, the high-water mark of the "Heavy Metal" era. Back then, we didn't just spray a car; we armored it. Our database is heaving with 395 colors from this vintage, ranging from the workhorse reliability of Western Star and Federal-Express fleet tones to the custom wizardry of House of Kolor and PPG Paints. Whether you were hauling freight in a Harvester Red rig or cruising the strip in Anniversary Gold Poly, the paint was thick, the lead was plentiful, and the shine was real. It was a buffet of pigment-everything from Arancio Atlas Tricoat to Silver Jade Poly-and every drop was designed to look like a million bucks under a neon diner sign.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the Single Stage Era, your 1966 Fleet isn't suffering from modern "peeling"-it's suffering from "The Chalk." In '66, we mixed the color and the gloss in the same pot. It looked deep enough to swim in, but those resins have a shelf life. If your Autumn Red or Dark Hunter Green looks like it was dusted with flour, that's oxidation. The sun has literally cooked the binders out of the surface, leaving dead pigment behind. It's a slow, chalky fade that'll turn a vibrant Target Red into a sad, matte pink if you let it sit out in the elements.

Restoration Tip

The beauty of these 1966 single-stage finishes is that there is actual "meat" on the bone. Unlike modern factory finishes that are thinner than a coat of spit, this old-school paint has pigment all the way through. My advice: It needs wax or it dies. Before you reach for the spray gun, try a heavy compounding. You'll be amazed how much life is hidden under that oxidation. Once you've leveled it and found the "wet" look again, seal it like your life depends on it. High-grade carnauba or a heavy sealant is the only thing keeping those 1966 resins from turning back into dust. Use it often, or watch your hard work blow away in the wind.
