How to Find Your 1955 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1955 Ford Background Info

The 1955 Ford Vibe

Welcome to the peak of the "Googie" era. In 1955, Ford wasn't just selling cars; they were selling optimism in Technicolor. Whether it was the flagship Fairlane Crown Victoria with its "tiara" chrome or the first-year Thunderbird, the goal was to be seen from three blocks away. Our database tracks 16 of the most iconic shades from this year, and let me tell you, this palette is a fever dream of mid-century cool. You had everything from the punchy Torch Red and Goldenrod Yellow to the "Easter egg" pastels like Tropical Rose and Sea Sprite Green. If you weren't rocking a two-tone job with Snowshoe White on the roof and Aquatone Blue on the doors, you just weren't trying.

Paint Health Check

We are deep in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '55, they didn't have a clear coat to hide behind-the color is the protection. These enamels were tough as a $2 steak when they left the factory, but they have one mortal enemy: the sun. Because there's no clear layer, the pigment is sitting right on the surface. Over the decades, the oils in the paint evaporate, leaving behind that "chalky" white haze we call oxidation. If that Raven Black looks more like a dusty chalkboard or your Regatta Blue has turned into a matte gray, don't panic-it's just the paint "dying" for a drink of oil.

Restoration Tip

Before you grab the sandpaper and commit to a full respray, try a deep "exfoliation" first. Single-stage paint is surprisingly thick and can often be brought back to life by removing that dead top layer. Use a high-quality polishing compound with a machine buffer to cut through the oxidation and reveal the fresh, vibrant Thunderbird Blue or Buckskin Brown hiding underneath. But here's the salty truth: once you bring that shine back, it needs wax or it dies. Without a regular coat of high-grade paste wax to seal those pores, the oxidation will return faster than a door-to-door salesman. Treat it like skin-keep it clean, keep it sealed, and it'll outlast us both.
