How to Find Your 1957 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1957 Ford Background Info

The 1957 Ford Vibe

Welcome to 1957, the year Ford finally outsold Chevy and did it with more chrome than a kitchen appliance convention. Whether you're looking at the hard-working 1957 Trucks or the long, finned beauties in the "All Other Models" category, Ford wasn't shy about options. Our database tracks 22 distinct colors for this year-an absolute buffet of post-war optimism. We're talking about a time when you could legitimately order a car in Dusk Rose, Inca Gold, or Coral Sand without anyone questioning your toughness. It was the era of the two-tone masterpiece, where Colonial White wasn't just a color; it was the divider that made those pastels pop.

Paint Health Check

You're dealing with the Single Stage Era here. Back then, the color and the shine were all mixed into one thick, honest bucket of enamel. There's no clear coat to peel off, but that doesn't mean you're in the clear. The biggest enemy of 1957 steel is "Oxidation." If that Starmist Blue or Willow Green looks like someone rubbed a chalkboard eraser all over it, that's the paint literally dying on the surface. Without a clear shield, the sun cooks the pigment until it turns into a chalky, matte mess. It's bulletproof compared to modern "robot-sprayed" thin stuff, but it's thirsty.

Restoration Tip

Here's the good news: because it's single stage, that "dead" look is often just a skin deep problem. You can usually buff a 1957 Ford back to life because there's enough "meat" on the bone to polish. But hear me loud and clear: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've corrected that Flame Red or Raven Black to a mirror finish, you have to seal it. Modern synthetic waxes or old-school carnauba are your best friends. If you leave that fresh pigment exposed to the elements without a sacrificial layer of wax, you'll be back to "Chalk City" by next summer. Treat it like a living thing-keep it fed, keep it covered, and never let it go thirsty.
