How to Find Your 1960 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1960 Ford Background Info

The 1960 Ford Vibe

1960 was the year Ford decided to give everyone exactly what they wanted. You had the brand-new Falcon for the budget-conscious, the sophisticated "Squarebird" Thunderbird for the high-rollers, and a fleet of full-sized Galaxie and Fairlane models that looked like they were ready to taxi onto a runway. Our database tracks 22 distinct colors for this year, and let me tell you, Ford wasn't shy about it. From the deep Royal Burgundy Poly to the neon-adjacent Sultana Turquoise, these cars didn't just drive down the street-they made the street look better.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '60, Ford was spraying "Diamond Lustre" acrylic enamel. It was tough, thick, and polished up like a mirror, but it has one mortal enemy: the sun. Because there's no clear coat to shield the pigment, 1960 paint suffers from "Chalky Fade" or oxidation. If your Monte Carlo Red looks more like a dusty pink or your Acapulco Blue Poly has a white, hazy film over it, that's actually dead paint sitting on the surface. The binders have given up the ghost, leaving behind a dry, porous shell that's begging to rust if you don't seal it.

Restoration Tip

Since this is single-stage enamel, you have to be a surgeon, not a butcher. To bring back the shine, you need to carefully buff away that oxidized "chalk" layer to expose the fresh pigment hiding underneath. But remember: it needs wax or it dies. Once you've leveled the surface and applied your touch-up, you must keep a heavy coat of high-quality wax or sealant on it. Without that barrier, the porous enamel will start drinking up moisture and UV rays all over again, and you'll be back to square one by next season. Build your layers slowly, and never let it sit "naked" in the sun.
