How to Find Your 1964 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1964 Ford Background Info

The 1964 Ford Vibe

1964 wasn't just a year; it was a revolution on four wheels. This was the year the Mustang charged onto the scene and turned the Ford Falcon into a legend by association. Whether you were hauling lumber in an F-100 or cruising the strip in a Galaxie, Ford was giving you options-29 of them, to be exact. We're talking about an era where you could choose between the blinding purity of Wimbledon White, the aggressive pop of Poppy Red, or the deep, metallic soul of Caspian Blue. These weren't just colors; they were statements of intent. If you couldn't find a shade you liked among the 29 we've tracked down, you weren't looking hard enough.

Paint Health Check

Here's the cold, hard truth: 1964 was the heart of the Single Stage Era. Back then, we didn't have clear coats to hide behind. Your Poppy Red or Vintage Burgundy is a single, thick layer of pigment and resin exposed to the world. The biggest threat to your Ford isn't just the neighbor's kid with a baseball-it's Oxidation. If your hood looks like it's been dusted with a chalkboard eraser, that's your paint literally disintegrating under the sun. Once that "chalky fade" sets in, the pigment is gasping for air. This stuff is honest, old-school tech, but it's vulnerable.

Restoration Tip

If you're working with original 1964 factory enamel or lacquer, remember the golden rule: It needs wax or it dies. Because there is no clear coat "shield," the second you finish a repair or a buff, you have to seal it. Modern factory paints are thin and efficient, but this 1964 stuff has depth-use that to your advantage. When you're color-matching a survivor, don't just spray and walk away. Feed that thirsty single-stage with a high-quality sealant or a heavy carnauba wax to block the UV rays. If you leave it naked, the sun will turn your show-stopper back into a matte-pink memory before the next season starts.
