How to Find Your 1969 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1969 Ford Background Info

The 1969 Ford Vibe

1969 was the year Detroit grew hair on its chest and the marketing guys at Ford clearly had a lot of time-and maybe some questionable substances-on their hands. Whether you were tearing up the strip in a Mustang Mach 1 or floating down the highway in a Thunderbird, you had a staggering 41 colors to choose from. This was the peak of the "name it something crazy" era. We're talking Anti-Establishment Mint Irid for the rebels, Freudian Gilt Irid for the guys who needed a shrink, and Thanks A Vermillion Irid for the pun-lovers. From Black Jade to Candy Apple Red, Ford wasn't just selling cars; they were selling a technicolor dream.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Single Stage Era, kid. Back in '69, Ford was spraying honest-to-God acrylic enamel. There's no "safety blanket" clear coat here; the pigment is the only thing standing between the Detroit steel and the elements. The "Legend" of this paint is that it's thick and durable, BUT it's prone to the "Chalky Fade"-technically known as oxidation. If your Acapulco Blue or Royal Maroon looks like a dusty chalkboard, that's the UV rays literally eating the binder out of the paint. Without a clear coat to protect them, those "Irid" (metallic) flakes are exposed to the air. If they look dull, it's because the tiny aluminum bits are oxidizing right on the surface.

Restoration Tip

The beauty of 1969 single-stage paint is that you can often "find" the original color buried under the crust. If the paint is dull but not peeling, don't reach for the sander yet. Use a dedicated paint cleaner or a mild polish to "shave" off the dead, oxidized layer and reveal the vibrant Grabber Yellow or Gulfstream Aqua underneath. However, here is the Golden Rule: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've polished that surface, it's "open" and vulnerable. You must seal it with a high-quality wax immediately to act as a sacrificial barrier, or you'll be back to square one by next summer.
