How to Find Your 1974 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1974 Ford Background Info

The 1974 Ford Vibe

Welcome to 1974, where the oil crisis was in full swing but Ford's color palette was louder than ever. Whether you're staring at an F-100 Truck that's seen more dirt than a garden shovel or a Maverick Grabber trying to look fast in Bold Orange, this was the year of the "Glow." With 63 colors in our database, Ford wasn't shy. They were slapping Ginger Glow Poly and Ivy Glow Metallic on everything from the Mustang II to the Country Squire station wagon. It was a glorious era of earth tones and high-impact pigments designed to distract you from the fact that your Pinto might be a bit... temperamental.

Paint Health Check

If your '74 Ford is still wearing its original coat, you're dealing with the Single Stage Era. Back then, we didn't have the luxury of a clear coat to take the hits; the color and the protection were one and the same. But here is the reality: single stage paint is a living, breathing thing, and by now, it's probably gasping for air. If you lean against your Boxwood Green fender and come away with a chalky green smudge on your jeans, that's oxidation. The sun has literally cooked the binders out of the paint, leaving a "dead" layer of pigment on top. Without a serious intervention, that Bright Red Poly is going to turn into a dull, pinkish ghost of its former self. It needs wax or it dies-plain and simple.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up or restoring these 70s legends, remember that single stage paint is thicker and more "honest" than modern factory finishes. If you're working with those heavy metallics like Saddle Bronze Poly or Silver Blue Poly, watch your spray distance; those flakes like to "mottle" or bunch up if you're too heavy-handed. Since this era is prone to "orange peel" right off the assembly line, don't be afraid to give your repair a light wet-sand and a heavy buff once it's cured. Most importantly: once you've restored that shine, seal it. Use a high-quality solvent-based wax or sealant to lock out the oxygen. If you leave that fresh paint "naked," the 1974 sun will start eating it again before you can even get it to the local car show.
