How to Find Your 1976 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1976 Ford Background Info

The 1976 Ford Vibe

Welcome to 1976-the year of the Bicentennial, where the metal was thick, the wheelbase on the Thunderbird was roughly the length of a football field, and the Ford Truck was cementing its legacy as the backbone of America. In a decade largely defined by a sea of earth-toned browns and avocado greens, our records show the survivors are the ones that made a real statement. We've kept the torch burning for the boldest of the bunch: Chartreuse. It's a high-visibility, "funk-era" classic that perfectly captures the transition from disco-dusk to the neon '80s.

Paint Health Check

Back in '76, Ford was laying down Single Stage Acrylic Enamel. This was the "Bulletproof Era" of paint tech-it's thick, it's durable, and it's honestly more metal than plastic. But here's the rub: because there's no clear coat to act as a sacrificial shield, the pigment itself takes the full brunt of the sun. This leads to the classic "chalky fade" known as oxidation. If your Ford looks like it's been dusted with lime-flavored powdered sugar, that's the paint literally dying on the surface. Unlike modern cars that peel and flake, these old-school finishes just get tired and thirsty.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up that Chartreuse finish, remember the Golden Rule of the Single Stage Era: It needs wax or it dies. Before you apply any fresh paint, you have to strip away that "dead" chalky layer with a dedicated paint cleaner or a light rubbing compound; otherwise, you're just painting over dust. Once you've achieved a match, keep that finish sealed. A heavy carnauba wax isn't just for show on a '76 Ford-it's the only thing keeping the oxygen from eating your color alive. Treat it like a living thing and it'll stay vibrant for another fifty years.
