How to Find Your 1978 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1978 Ford Background Info

The 1978 Ford Vibe

1978 was the year Ford leaned hard into the "personal luxury" craze with the Thunderbird and solidified the F-Series as the king of the dirt road. Our database tracks 53 distinct colors for this year, and let me tell you, the variety was wild. You had the quintessential '70s "basement wood-paneling" palette like Dark Brown Metallic and Chamois, but Ford wasn't afraid to get loud. If you were driving a Mustang or a Pinto in Tangerine, Lipstick Red, or Bright Aqua Metallic, people saw you coming from three blocks away. It was an era of heavy metallic "Poly" finishes and deep earth tones that made every Truck and Thunderbird look like it belonged on a sunset-drenched postcard.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '78, Ford was spraying high-solids acrylic enamel. It's "honest" paint-thick and durable-but it has one major weakness: it's porous. Without a clear coat to act as a plastic shield, the sun and oxygen go to work on the pigments immediately. If your '78 Ford looks like it's been dusted with white flour, you're looking at Oxidation. That "chalky" fade is the paint literally breaking down into powder. The darker, high-pigment colors like Dark Midnight Blue or Midnight Jade are the first to go "chalky" if they've spent a decade sitting outside.

Restoration Tip

The beauty of 1978 single-stage paint is that there is usually enough material left to save. You can often "bring back the dead" by using a medium-cut rubbing compound to strip away that oxidized top layer and find the vibrant Dark Nectarine Poly or Medium Copper hidden underneath. But listen close: It needs wax or it dies. Once you buff off that oxidation, the paint is "open" and vulnerable. If you don't seal it with a high-quality wax immediately (and keep it waxed), the sun will turn it back into a dusty chalkboard before the next season change.
