How to Find Your 1979 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1979 Ford Background Info

The 1979 Ford Vibe

1979 was the year Ford decided that if you couldn't beat the disco era, you might as well out-paint it. We've got a massive 43 colors in our vault for this year, and it's a total trip through the late-seventies aesthetic. Whether you were floating down the highway in a Thunderbird or hauling gear in an F-Series, Ford had a shade for every leisure suit in the closet. The palette was heavy on the "Earth Tones"-think Dark Jade Metallic, Chamois Metallic, and Dark Pine Metallic-but they kept the flame alive for the traditionalists with Candyapple Red and Bright Yellow. It was a time of big metal, big vinyl tops, and even bigger color choices.

Paint Health Check

You are firmly in the Single Stage Era. This was before the industry got "efficient" with thin clear coats. Your 1979 Ford was sprayed with a thick, high-solids acrylic enamel. The good news? It doesn't "peel" or delaminate like a sun-beaten car from the 90s. The bad news? It breathes, and it dies slowly. Without a clear layer of protection, the sun cooks the oils right out of the pigment, leading to that classic "chalky" oxidation. If your Dark Cordovan Metallic looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a deep maroon, you're looking at decades of surface death. It's a solid, honest paint, but it's vulnerable to the elements.

Restoration Tip

Because this is single-stage paint, you can actually "resurrect" it-to a point. If the color looks dull and chalky, you aren't seeing a failed clear coat; you're seeing oxidized pigment sitting on the surface. You can often buff that top layer of "dead" paint away to reveal the vibrant Light Wedgewood Blue or Tangerine hiding underneath. But remember the Golden Rule for 1979: It needs wax or it dies. Once you've polished it back to a shine, you've exposed "fresh" paint that has no natural defense against the sun. Seal it immediately with a high-quality wax or sealant, or you'll be back to a matte finish before the next oil change.
