How to Find Your 1981 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1981 Ford Background Info

The 1981 Ford Vibe

1981 was a strange, beautiful crossroads for Ford. We were moving away from the "brown and beige" disco decade and into a world of synth-pop and neon, but the Bronco and the Thunderbird still had one foot firmly in the old school. With a staggering 45 colors in our database for this year, it's clear Ford was throwing everything at the wall to see what stuck. You had your workhorse Antique Cream and Fawn for the Econolines and Medium Pickups, but then you'd see a Bright Bittersweet or Bright Lime Green Metallic that looked like it belonged on a poster in a teenager's bedroom. It was a massive palette for a fleet that ranged from heavy-duty steel to the sharp lines of the early 80s "Fox Body" influence.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the Single Stage Era, your 1981 Ford isn't suffering from the peeling "skin graft" look of later years; it's suffering from "The Chalk." Back then, the color and the gloss were mixed into one thick layer. Over forty years, the sun has been busy cooking those resins, leading to heavy Oxidation. If your Dark Cordovan Metallic looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a deep wine color, that's the pigment literally dying on the surface. These paints were tough, but they were also "porous" compared to modern stuff-they breathe, they age, and if they weren't sheltered, they effectively turned into a fine powder.

Restoration Tip

Here's the deal: with 1981 single-stage paint, it needs wax or it dies. If you're seeing that milky, hazy oxidation, don't panic-you actually have more "meat" to work with than a modern car. You can often buff a single-stage finish back to a mirror shine because you're leveling the actual color layer, not just a thin clear film. Use a high-quality compound to take off the dead "chalk" layer, but once you find the shine, you have to seal it immediately. Without a dedicated wax or sealant to plug those pores, the oxidation will return faster than a hair metal power ballad.
