How to Find Your 1982 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1982 Ford Background Info

The 1982 Ford Vibe

1982 was a hell of a year for Ford. It was the year they handed us the very first Ranger and kept the Bronco looking like a beautiful, square-jawed brick. With a massive catalog of 58 colors, Ford wasn't just building trucks and Thunderbirds; they were auditioning for a role in a Technicolor dream. You had everything from the "loud as a rock concert" Bright Lime Green Metallic to the "executive mahogany" look of Dark Cordovan Metallic. Whether you were hauling hay in an Econoline or cruising in a Medium Pickup, you had a color for every mood-provided that mood involved a lot of metallic flake and 80s optimism.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back then, "Clear Coat" was something only the fancy European imports or a few high-end Corvettes were bragging about. Your 1982 Ford was sprayed with a thick, honest layer of acrylic enamel where the pigment and the shine lived in the same house. The Legend says this paint is bulletproof, BUT it has one major enemy: the sun. Without a clear layer to protect it, that Bright Red or Bahama Blue is prone to "Oxidation." If your hood looks like it was rubbed down with a chalkboard eraser, that's just the top layer of paint dying and turning into a dry, chalky powder.

Restoration Tip

The good news about single-stage paint is that it's remarkably forgiving if you've got the elbow grease. Before you reach for the spray gun, try "cutting" the paint. Use a medium-grade polishing compound to strip away that oxidized "dead" layer and reveal the vibrant Brite Blue Metallic hiding underneath. Once you find the shine, remember the golden rule of 1982: It needs wax or it dies. Without a modern clear coat, you are the only thing standing between your paint and the elements. Seal it with a high-quality carnuba or polymer wax every few months, or you'll be back to that chalky finish before the next oil change.
