How to Find Your 1997 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1997 Ford Background Info

The 1997 Ford Vibe

1997 was the year Ford decided that sharp corners were out and "jellybean" curves were in. It was the era of the brand-new Expedition taking over suburban driveways, the peak of the "bubble-body" Taurus, and the F-Series finally getting those aerodynamic lines. Our database tracks 13 specific colors from this year-a collection of survivors that defined the late-90s aesthetic. We're talking about those deep, moody jewel tones like Dark Toreador Red Pearl and Medium Wedgewood Metallic, along with the eternal Silver Frost Metallic that seemed to be on every third Mustang or Explorer on the road.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to The Peeling Era. By '97, Ford was deep into the basecoat/clearcoat transition, but the chemistry hadn't quite perfected the battle against the sun. If you're looking at the hood of your Ranger or the roof of your E-Series and it looks like it's flaking after a bad case of road-rash sunburn, you're dealing with classic delamination. This is the era where the clear coat loses its bond with the color underneath, leading to those ugly white flakes and patches. If your paint hasn't started lifting yet, you've either got a "garage queen" or the factory actually had a good day in the booth.

Restoration Tip

The golden rule for 1997 steel is seal the chips immediately. On these mid-90s Fords, a rock chip isn't just a beauty mark; it's a breach in the hull. Once moisture and air get under the clear coat at the edge of a chip, the delamination starts to spread like a run in a pair of stockings. Use your touch-up to "cap" the edges of any visible chips. By dabbing the color in and ensuring it overlaps the edge of the clear, you're essentially gluing the layers back down and preventing the dreaded "peel-back" that eventually requires a full respray.
