How to Find Your 1999 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

1999 Ford Background Info

The 1999 Ford Vibe

Welcome to 1999, the year we were all prepping for the Y2K apocalypse while Ford was busy stuffing the suburbs with the massive Expedition and making the Mustang look "New Edge." It was a peak era for the Blue Oval-the F-Series was the undisputed king of the job site, and the Taurus was still the "jellybean" champion of the rental lot. With 19 different colors in our stable, it's clear Ford wasn't shy about variety. Whether you were rocking Spruce Green Metallic on a Ranger or Toreador Red on an Explorer, these cars were the background of the turn of the millennium.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with a 1999 build, you're stuck right in the middle of the "Peeling Era." By now, that Silver Frost Metallic or Oxford White is likely showing its age. The biggest headache with late-90s Ford paint isn't oxidation-it's delamination. This is where the clear coat decides it's done being friends with the base coat and starts flaking off like a bad sunburn, especially on the hood and roof. If you see white, chalky flakes or "spider cracking" appearing under the surface, you've got clear coat failure. Once that top layer lifts, the base coat underneath is as defenseless as a dial-up modem in a fiber-optic world.

Restoration Tip

In this era, a tiny rock chip is a ticking time bomb. Because the clear coat's bond is the weak link, moisture and wind can get under the edge of a chip and start "peeling the onion," turning a speck into a saucer-sized bald spot. The Fix: Seal every chip the moment you see it. Use a touch-up pen or brush to fill the void and lock down the surrounding clear coat edges. If you've already got a "map" of peeling clear, you'll need to sand the edges smooth before applying a fresh clear coat to stop the spread. Don't wait-once that Dark Toreador Red is exposed to the elements without its top coat, it'll fade faster than a boy band's career.
