How to Find Your 2005 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

2005 Ford Background Info

The 2005 Ford Vibe

Welcome to 2005-the year Ford decided that if a vehicle didn't have a footprint larger than a studio apartment, it wasn't worth building. We're talking about the swan song of the Excursion, the reign of the F-Series, and the birth of the retro-futuristic S197 Mustang. In our database alone, we're tracking 52 different colors for this year. Ford was feeling experimental, giving us everything from the "fleet-manager special" Arizona Beige Metallic to the neck-snapping Screaming Yellow and Sonic Blue Pearl. Whether you were hauling a soccer team in a Freestar or patrolling the highway in a Police Car, 2005 was the peak of Ford's "more is more" philosophy.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the "Peeling Era" now. By 2005, Ford had perfected the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the clear coat they used on the roofs and hoods of the Explorer, Expedition, and F-Series has a nasty habit of "delaminating." If your Oxford White or Silver Birch looks like it's developing a bad sunburn with giant, flaky potato chips of clear lifting off the surface, you've got clear coat failure. Once that UV-protective shield decides to part ways with the color coat underneath, the clock is ticking. Moisture gets trapped under the edges, and before you know it, your Taurus looks like it's shedding its skin.

Restoration Tip

If you catch a rock chip or a small "lifting" spot on your 2005 Ford, do not wait. In this era, a small chip is an invitation for the clear coat to start a full-scale retreat. When repairing these, the secret is "feathering." You can't just dab paint into a hole where the clear coat has flaked away; you need to lightly sand the surrounding clear coat edges until they are smooth to the touch. This prevents the new paint from getting "pushed out" by the old, failing clear. Seal those chips immediately to lock out the air and humidity, or that Dark Toreador Red will be a memory by next summer.
