How to Find Your 2006 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

2006 Ford Background Info

The 2006 Ford Vibe

Welcome to 2006, the year Ford decided to give us a color for every mood. We're talking about a massive 69-color palette that ranged from the "look-at-me" Screaming Yellow on the Mustang to the "witness protection program" Silver Birch Pearl found on every other Crown Victoria and F-150. This was the year the Fusion first hit the streets, looking sharp in Tungsten Gray, while the GT was still out there making everything else look slow in Performance White. Whether you were hauling in an Econoline or cruising in a Windveil Blue Mustang, Ford was leaning hard into variety. If you're looking at your 2006 today, you're either looking at a well-loved survivor or a project that's seen better days under the sun.

Paint Health Check

We've officially entered The Thin Paint Era. By 2006, the factory robots had become masters of "efficiency," which is just a polite way of saying they got real stingy with the clear coat. These finishes look brilliant when they're fresh, but they don't have the "meat" on them that the old-school tanks did. If you own a Mustang, Explorer, or Expedition from this year, you've likely met the "Aluminum Itch"-that lovely bubbling and peeling on the leading edge of the hood. It wasn't just the sun; it was iron contamination in the aluminum panels reacting under a finish that was applied a hair too thin. If your clear coat is still intact, consider yourself lucky, because once these thin layers start to failure, they don't just fade-they flake.

Restoration Tip

Since we're dealing with "Robot Efficiency" thickness, your biggest mistake would be trying to fix a chip with one giant glob of paint. This isn't a 1970s lacquer job where you can just pile it on. Build your layers slowly. Apply a thin coat, let it dry, and repeat until you've built the depth back up to level. If you try to do it all at once, the solvent will trap itself, and you'll end up with a soft, shriveled mess that won't sand flat. Take your time, stay patient, and remember: three thin coats will always beat one thick one on a 2006 Ford.
