How to Find Your 2012 Ford's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

2012 Ford Background Info

The 2012 Ford Vibe

2012 was a busy year for the Blue Oval. We were all dodging the Mayan apocalypse while Ford was busy redesigning the Focus and giving the F-150 an "Ecoboost" heart transplant. The color palette was absolutely massive-our database tracks 75 distinct colors for this year alone. You had the high-energy pops like Blue Candy Metallic Tricoat and Grabber Blue on the Mustangs, alongside the earthy, "I'm an adult now" tones like Ginger Ale Metallic and Kodiak Brown. And let's not forget Tuxedo Black-that Xirallic sparkle was so popular they actually ran out of the pigment after the tsunami in Japan. It was an era where Ford wasn't afraid to let their cars shine, provided you could keep the paint on the metal.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the "Thin Paint Era." By 2012, the factory robots had become surgically efficient. They were calibrated to spray the absolute minimum amount of material needed to pass inspection. While it looked great on the showroom floor, it left us with a finish that's "efficiency-thin." If you're driving an Expedition, Explorer, or Mustang, you've likely seen the "Ford Flu"-those mysterious bubbles forming on the leading edge of the aluminum hood. That's not rust; it's oxidation caused by iron contamination during the stamping process, and once that clear coat starts to lift or the aluminum starts to "bloom," the clock is ticking. Between the thin clear coats and the aluminum issues, these Fords are prone to stone chips that go straight to the bone.

Restoration Tip

Because 2012 paint is applied so thin, you can't treat a repair like you're frosting a cake. If you try to fill a chip in one heavy "blob," the solvent won't outgas properly, and you'll end up with a soft, shrunken mess that stands out like a sore thumb. The secret here is layering. Build your color in two or three thin passes, letting it dry to a dull tack between each. If you're working with one of the many metallics like Ingot Silver or Tuxedo Black, a light touch is essential to keep the flakes from "flooding" and looking too dark. Finish with a dedicated clear coat to match the factory gloss-just remember, the goal is to build up to the surface, not over it.
