How to Find Your Ford Aerostar's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

The Color Breakdown

Ford didn't just make a minivan; they made a rolling canvas. With a staggering 84 colors recorded over its lifespan, the Aerostar era was a wild time for automotive palettes. They really went for it-offering everything from the sophisticated Mocha Frost Metallic to the bold, very-90s Wild Strawberry Pearl Metallic. Whether yours is a "Spinnaker Blue" or a "Deep Jewel Green," Ford made sure your family hauler had more personality than the average grey box.

What to Watch For

If you're noticing the paint on your hood or roof starting to look a bit like a sunburned tourist, you're not alone. Many Aerostars from the late 80s and early 90s struggle with "The Great Peel," where the clear coat decides it's had enough of the sun and starts to lift. Before you start your touch-up, you'll need your code. Swing open the driver's side door and look at the VIN sticker on the door jamb. You're looking for a two-character code sitting right next to the label "EXT PNT." Once you have those two letters, you're ready to roll.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many Aerostar colors are metallics or pearls (like that Toreador Red), those tiny sparkles like to settle at the bottom of the bottle while it sits on your shelf. Give your touch-up bottle an extra 60 seconds of vigorous shaking-beyond what you think is necessary-to wake up those metallic flakes. When applying, think "less is more." Use the tip of the brush to dab a tiny amount into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. It requires a little patience, but building up two or three thin layers will always look better than one giant blob.
