How to Find Your Ford Econoline's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

The Color Breakdown

Ford really didn't hold back with the Econoline, recording a staggering 255 colors over the years. This van has worn everything from the iconic School Bus Yellow and the rugged Woodland Green Metallic to the surprisingly classy Toreador Red Pearl Metallic. Whether yours is a fleet workhorse in Oxford White or a high-end camper in Estate Green, they certainly gave us plenty of variety to work with. They really went for it-offering everything from "50 shades of grey" to deep jewel tones that make these giant metal boxes look almost elegant.

What to Watch For

The Econoline is a champion of utility, but its massive surface area means the paint has a lot of "weather" to deal with. On many models, especially those from the 90s and early 2000s, you might see what we call the "great flake"-where the paint on the flat roof or the hood decides it's had enough of the sun and starts to peel. You should also keep a close eye on the door hinges and the rain gutters; these are prime spots for little chips that can lead to surface rust if ignored. To find your exact match, open the driver's door and look at the safety sticker on the jamb. You're looking for the code next to the letters EXT PNT.

Driveway Repair Tip

If you're working with one of Ford's many metallic or pearl colors, like Harvest Gold or Deep Wedgewood Blue, your biggest challenge is "settling." Those tiny metallic sparkles like to sink to the bottom of the bottle. Before you touch the van, shake your paint bottle or pen for a full two minutes-long after you think you're done, keep shaking. When applying the paint to a chip, don't try to fill the whole crater in one go. Dabbing a single, thin layer and letting it dry before adding a second requires patience, but it prevents the paint from looking like a dark blob and helps those metallic flakes lay down flat and shiny, just like the factory intended.
