How to Find Your Ford Explorer's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

The Color Breakdown

Ford didn't just release a SUV; they released a rolling art gallery. With 237 colors recorded, they really went for it. You might be driving an Explorer in the understated Arizona Beige Metallic, the loud-and-proud Chrome Yellow, or the delightfully literal Blue My Mind. Whether your Explorer looks like a field of Wild Strawberry Metallic or a sophisticated Tuxedo Black, Ford has provided plenty of variety to keep driveway repair projects interesting.

What to Watch For

Before you pop the cap on your paint pen, check the driver's side door jamb. Look for the sticker with the label "EXT PNT"-that two-digit code is your North Star. Now, for the honest truth: keep a close eye on the leading edge of your hood. Many Explorers use aluminum hoods, which don't "rust" in the traditional sense, but they can develop small bubbles if a rock chip goes untreated. If you see a tiny chip on the front of the hood, treat it like a ticking clock; sealing it early prevents that "bubbling" look that can spread under the surface.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since many of Ford's best colors-like Red Candy Tricoat or White Platinum-rely on metallic flakes or pearls to get that shine, you need to "wake up" the paint. Shake your touch-up bottle for at least 60 seconds (longer than you think you need) to ensure those sparkles are evenly distributed. When applying, think "less is more." Use the tip of the applicator to dab a tiny amount into the center of the chip and let it flow to the edges. It's better to do two paper-thin layers than one big, gloopy drop that ends up looking like a ladybug on your hood.
