How to Find Your Ford F-Series's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

The Color Breakdown

Ford has been painting the F-Series since before your granddad had his first driver's license, and with 326 recorded colors, they've clearly explored the entire rainbow. From the "let's get to work" classics like Oxford White to the "look at me" brilliance of Code Orange and Blue Flame Metallic, they really went for it. Whether you're driving a vintage Arizona Beige cruiser or a modern Velocity Blue beast, Ford's palette is less of a color list and more of a 50-year art project.

What to Watch For

Before you start, you need your "EXT PNT" code. You'll find it on the white certification sticker inside the driver's side door jamb. If your truck is from the "aluminum age" (2015 and newer), keep a close eye on the front edge of the hood and the roof seams. You might notice small bubbles or flakes where the paint is trying to part ways with the metal. Don't panic; it's a common quirk of aluminum panels. If you catch these little "paint pimples" early with a touch-up pen, you can stop them from turning into a full-blown peeling project later.

Driveway Repair Tip

When using a touch-up pen or brush, remember: your F-Series is big, but your repair should stay small. If you're working with one of Ford's famous metallics, like Tuxedo Black or Ruby Red, shake that bottle for a full two minutes-those tiny metallic flakes like to nap at the bottom. Instead of one big, gloppy "bead" of paint, apply two or three paper-thin layers. It requires a bit of patience, but it's the difference between a repair that disappears and one that looks like a grape stuck to your door.
