How to Find Your Ford Ranger's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

The Color Breakdown

Ford has been making the Ranger since back when hair was big and neon was king, and they've recorded a staggering 277 colors to prove it. They really went for it with the palette, giving us everything from the vibrant Jalapeno Green Metallic and Screaming Yellow to the modern, eye-popping Cyber Orange Tricoat. Whether your truck is dressed in the classic Oxford White or the sophisticated Arizona Beige, Ford clearly believes a work truck doesn't have to be boring.

What to Watch For

If you feel like your Ranger picks up a new rock chip every time you drive past a gravel driveway, you aren't imagining it. The paint on these trucks-especially the newer generations-is known for being a bit on the thin side. You'll want to keep a close eye on the leading edge of the hood and the door edges, as these are the first places the "road rash" tends to show up. On older models, keep an eye on the roof and bed rails where the sun likes to beat down.

To find your specific color match, open the driver's side door and look at the sticker on the jamb. You're looking for a two-character code listed right next to the letters "EXT PNT."

Driveway Repair Tip

Because many of the Ranger's best colors are heavy on the metallic and pearl (looking at you, Hot Pepper Red), my best advice is to treat your touch-up bottle like a can of paint that's been sitting in the garage for a decade: shake it until your arm hurts. Give it a solid 60 seconds of agitation to wake up those metallic flakes so they don't all clump at the bottom. When you apply the paint, don't try to fill a deep chip in one go. Think of it like building a Lego set-apply one thin layer, let it dry for 15 minutes, and then come back for a second pass. This keeps the paint from sagging and helps it sit flush with the rest of your truck.
