How to Find Your Ford T-Bird's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

The Color Breakdown

Ford didn't just stick to the basics with the Thunderbird; they gave us a palette of 12 distinct personalities. From the deep, ocean-inspired Pacific Green Metallic to the high-drama Laser Red Pearl Metallic Tri-coat, they really went for it. Whether your Bird is sporting the earthy Light Prairie Tan or the sophisticated Arctic Green Metallic, these colors were designed to catch the light during a Saturday afternoon cruise.

What to Watch For

Before you get to work, you'll need to verify your specific shade. Pop open the driver's door and look at the door jamb-you should find a warranty plate or sticker with your paint code. While the T-Bird is a classic, the paint can show its age; keep an eye out for "sun-tired" spots on the hood and trunk lid where the clear coat might start to peel like a bad sunburn. If you see some fading or minor "orange peel" texture, don't sweat it-it's a common Ford trait from this era and very manageable in your own driveway.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since many T-Bird colors-like Crystal White Pearl or the various metallics-rely on depth and sparkle, your best friend is a stopwatch. Shake your touch-up bottle for a full 60 seconds (set a timer!) to make sure all those pearl and metallic flakes are properly woken up and dancing. When you apply the paint, remember that patience is your secret weapon. Instead of one thick blob, use the tip of your brush to apply three thin layers, letting each one dry in between. It takes a little longer, but the finish will look much smoother.
