How to Find Your Ford Truck's Color Code

Ford paint color codes are on the drivers door jamb, on the color plate. The typical format is PM/M6599, though usually only PM appears. Example: PM corresponds to Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat PM/M6599; it may appear as PM Bright Calypso Metallic Clearcoat. Plates may show Exterior Paint Colors or EX PT; sometimes the color is embossed mid-plate. WB is wheelbase; above Wheel Base is EXT PNT, and to the right of EXT PNT is the code. Many mistake LX3 as the code.

The Color Breakdown

Ford has recorded a staggering 280 colors for their trucks over the decades, and they really went for it. Whether you're driving a modern workhorse or a vintage beauty, you're dealing with a palette that ranges from the legendary Grabber Blue and Candyapple Red to the more adventurous Nectarine Metallic and Boxwood Green. They even have colors like Wimbledon White, which sounds like it should be at a tennis match, and Chrome Yellow, which ensures you'll never lose your truck in a parking lot. It's a massive list, proving that Ford knows their drivers want to stand out, even when they're covered in mud.

What to Watch For

Before you start dabbing, you need your "EXT PNT" code. You'll find this on a sticker inside the driver's side door jamb. It's usually a two-character code sitting right next to those letters. Once you have your paint, keep an eye on the "hot zones": Ford trucks are prone to paint bubbling on the leading edges of the hood and the tailgate, often due to the way paint interacts with the aluminum panels. You might also see some peeling in the roof gutters (those long trenches on the top of the cab). These are just character marks from a life on the road, and they are perfectly manageable with a little bit of focus.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many Ford colors are "Poly" (Polychromatic), "Metallic," or "Irid," the secret is in the shake. Those tiny metallic flakes like to settle at the bottom of the bottle like tired dogs. Shake your touch-up pen or bottle for a full two minutes-yes, set a timer-to wake up that shimmer. When you apply it to a chip, don't use long brush strokes. Instead, use a "dabbing" motion to fill the crater. If you're working with a high-sparkle color like Silver Metallic or Hot Ginger, matching the exact factory look requires patience. Apply one thin layer, let it dry, and see how it looks before adding another. It's better to build up the color slowly than to end up with a dark, heavy spot.
