How to Find Your 1961 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1961 GMC Background Info

The 1961 GMC Vibe

In 1961, a GMC truck wasn't just a tool; it was a transition. The industry was finally moving away from those soft 1950s pastels and into the rich, bold tones that defined the Space Race era. We've managed to track down 15 survivor colors from this year, and honestly, it's one of the most balanced palettes out there. You've got the heavy hitters like Woodland Green and Cardinal Red for the guys working the back forty, but then you see things like Tahiti Coral Metallic and Tampico Turquoise Metallic. Those metallics were GMC's way of saying a truck could look just as sharp at the Saturday night dance as it did at the grain elevator.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at original paint on a '61, you're dealing with the Single Stage Era. Back then, the color and the gloss were all cooked into one thick layer-there's no clear coat to peel off, but that doesn't mean it's invincible. The enemy here is Oxidation. If your Balboa Blue or Jet Black looks like someone rubbed a piece of chalk all over it, that's the pigment literally dying from sun exposure. Without a modern clear coat to take the UV punch, the paint dries out, becomes porous, and eventually turns into a dusty powder that'll wash right off into the driveway.

Restoration Tip

Here's the deal with 1961 enamel: it needs wax or it dies. If you're trying to patch a chip with our paint, do not just slap it over the old surface. That old single-stage paint has "pores," and sixty years of oxidation have filled them with debris. You need to buff the surrounding area with a light compound first to find the actual color hiding under the chalky haze. Once you've applied your touch-up, keep that truck sealed with a high-quality carnauba. Think of it like lotion for old skin-you're feeding the finish to keep it from cracking and fading back into the earth.
