How to Find Your 1962 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1962 GMC Background Info

The 1962 GMC Vibe

Back in '62, GMC wasn't just building trucks; they were building mobile monuments to steel and sweat. This was the final year of the legendary "Knee-Knocker" cab with that wrap-around windshield, a design that made you feel like you were piloting a spaceship even if you were just hauling hay. While most of these rigs spent their lives in the dirt, GMC went surprisingly heavy on the style, offering a massive 15-color palette. From the work-site staples like Omaha Orange and Brigade Blue to the flashier, Tiki-culture-inspired Crystal Turquoise Metallic and Tangier Gold Metallic, these trucks were starting to look more like the family car and less like a piece of farm equipment.

Paint Health Check

If you're staring at an original 1962 GMC today, you're looking at the Single Stage Era. We're talking about thick, honest lacquer or enamel where the gloss and the color are cooked into one layer. There's no clear coat "shield" standing between the world and your Seamist Jade Metallic. The biggest enemy here isn't peeling-it's Oxidation. Over the decades, the sun literally eats the binder in the paint, leaving behind a chalky, dull fade that makes your truck look like it was dusted with flour. If your Cardinal Red looks more like a dry pink brick, that's the pigment dying for a drink of oil and protection.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a survivor from the early sixties, remember the golden rule: It needs wax or it dies. Because these single-stage paints are porous compared to modern plastics, they "breathe." If you just slap on a patch and walk away, the surrounding old paint will continue to chalk out and leave your repair looking like a sore thumb. Before you touch up those chips in your Desert Beige, give the area a light buff to remove the oxidation. Once you've filled the chip, keep that steel sealed with a high-quality carnuba. In this era, the wax isn't just for shine-it's the only thing keeping the atmosphere from reclaiming your paint job.
