How to Find Your 1967 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1967 GMC Background Info

The 1967 GMC Vibe

1967 was a watershed year for GMC. It was the debut of the "Action Line" trucks-the moment these rigs stopped looking like farm implements and started looking like something you'd actually want to park in a suburban driveway. With 18 colors in our database for this year, GMC wasn't playing around. Whether your truck left the factory in the punchy Flame Red, the surf-inspired Aqua Metallic, or the dignified Terrace Blue, these trucks had a visual swagger that modern "fifty shades of gray" pickups just can't touch. Back then, a truck was a tool, but GMC made sure it was a tool that looked good in the sun.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the Single Stage Era. In '67, your GMC was sprayed with high-solids alkyd or acrylic enamel-thick, honest paint that wore its pigment on its sleeve. There's no clear coat "safety net" here. While that makes for a deep, rich look, it also means your paint is fighting a losing battle against the sun every single day. If your hood looks like it was rubbed down with a chalkboard eraser, that's oxidation. The pigment is literally dying on the surface, turning into a chalky white film. It's not "patina" if it's falling off as dust; it's a cry for help from a finish that's starving for oils.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up a chip or a door edge, you can't just slap paint over the top and call it a day. That chalky oxidation layer will act like a barrier, and our solvent-based touch-up won't bite the way it should. You have to buff it back to life first. Use a light rubbing compound to clear away the "dead" paint until the true color shines through. Once you've made your repair, remember the Golden Rule of 1967: It needs wax or it dies. Without a clear coat, a high-quality carnauba wax is the only thing standing between your Medium Blue Metallic and a slow, chalky fade into oblivion. Feed the paint, or the sun will eat it.
