How to Find Your 1972 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1972 GMC Background Info

The 1972 GMC Vibe

1972 was the swan song for the legendary "Action Line" trucks. It was the last year before GMC moved to the Square Body, and they went out with a bang. Whether you were rocking a C15 Sierra or a go-anywhere Jimmy, the street was a kaleidoscope of 14 different flavors. We're talking about a time when a work truck could look like a sunset. Our database is packed with the heavy hitters from that year-everything from the quintessential Medium Olive Poly and Orange to the high-class Mulsanne Blue Metallic and Flame Red. These weren't just utility vehicles; they were rolling canvases of 1970s optimism.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with the Single Stage Era, your GMC didn't come with a clear coat "lens" to protect it. Back then, the color was the protection. This paint is honest and thick, but it's got a mortal enemy: Oxidation. If your truck has been sitting under the sun, that deep Dark Green or Terrace Blue has likely turned into a chalky, matte mess. That white powder on your hand when you touch the fender? That's literally your paint dying. Because there's no clear coat to peel, the paint just slowly "chalks" away until you're looking at bare primer or, worse, the red oxide rust that loves to eat these cab corners for breakfast.

Restoration Tip

The good news is that single-stage paint is incredibly rewarding to resurrect. You aren't fighting a peeling clear coat; you're just dealing with "dead" surface molecules. To bring back the soul of that Medium Green or Yellow, you need to buff away the oxidation with a steady hand. Once you've cut through the chalk and found the shine underneath, listen close: It needs wax or it dies. Without a modern clear coat, you are the only thing standing between that pigment and the elements. Feed it a high-quality wax regularly to seal the pores, or you'll be back to a chalkboard finish before the next oil change.
