How to Find Your 1975 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1975 GMC Background Info

The 1975 GMC Vibe

In 1975, a GMC truck wasn't just a vehicle; it was a 4,000-pound statement of intent. This was the heart of the "Square Body" era, where the Sierra and Jimmy ruled the job site and the campground alike. While the rest of the world was getting bogged down in the oil crisis, GMC was busy offering a staggering 23 different ways to coat a fender. We're talking about a palette that captured the mid-70s perfectly-from the high-energy pop of Tangier Orange and Hawaiian Blue to the sophisticated, metallic depth of the "Irid" (Iridescent) line like Catalina Blue and Dark Gold. It was a time when your work truck could look like a sunset if you checked the right boxes on the order sheet.

Paint Health Check

Listen close, because this is the Single Stage Era. Back in '75, we didn't have the luxury (or the headache) of a clear coat. That Midnight Black or Crimson Red is one thick, honest layer of acrylic enamel or lacquer. The good news? The color has a richness and "soul" that modern robot-sprayed thin stuff can't touch. The bad news? This paint is alive, which means it can die. If your GMC has been baking in the sun for forty-plus years, you're likely looking at "Oxidation." That's when the top layer of the paint dries out and turns into a chalky, cloudy film. It's not a death sentence, but it's a sign that the environment is winning the war against your steel.

Restoration Tip

The beauty of single-stage paint is that it's forgiving to the touch. If your Skyline Blue looks more like a dusty chalkboard, you can often buff it back to a showroom shine because you're working with the actual pigment, not a plastic top layer. However, here is the Paint Whisperer's ultimatum for 1975 iron: It needs wax or it dies. Without a factory clear coat to protect it, your wax or sealant is the only thing standing between your GMC and the elements. If you aren't keeping a fresh coat of high-quality wax on that hood, the sun will drink your pigment for breakfast. Buff it, shine it, and seal it-or watch it fade back into history.
