How to Find Your 1976 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1976 GMC Background Info

The 1976 GMC Vibe

Welcome to the Bicentennial, where the trucks were square-jawed, the sideburns were long, and GMC was leaning hard into the "earth tone" revolution. Whether you were piloting a Sierra Classic or a heavy-duty C-Series, your color choice said a lot about your 1970s soul. With 23 colors in our database for '76, it's clear the factory wasn't shy. You had your patriotic staples like Crimson Red and Skyline Blue, but the real stars were the funky, muddy hues that defined the era-think Glenwood Green, Grecian Bronze, and the ever-polarizing Tangier Orange. These weren't just colors; they were a lifestyle.

Paint Health Check

You are dealing with the Single Stage Era, kid. Back then, "Clear Coat" was something you only saw on fingernails, not fenders. The good news is that this paint is thick and honest-it doesn't peel off in sheets like a bad sunburn. The bad news? It's alive, and it's slowly turning into chalk. If your Hawaiian Blue or Wheatland Yellow looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a shiny truck, that's oxidation. The sun literally bakes the pigments until they die on the surface. If you don't stay on top of it, that chalky "dead" layer will eventually eat right down to the primer.

Restoration Tip

Here's the golden rule for 1976 enamel: It needs wax or it dies. Before you even think about touching up a chip or a scratch, you've got to get rid of the "dead" paint first. If you try to paint over oxidation, it'll be like trying to glue hair to a dusty floor-it won't stick. Use a high-quality rubbing compound or a clay bar to peel back that chalky skin and find the "living" color underneath. Once you've hit the vibrant Catalina Blue Metallic hiding below the surface, seal it with a heavy wax. Keep it fed, keep it protected, and that single-stage shine will outlast any modern factory job.
