How to Find Your 1977 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1977 GMC Background Info

The 1977 GMC Vibe

Welcome to 1977-the year of the "Square Body." If you were heading to the GMC dealership this year, you weren't looking for a fuel-sipping commuter; you were looking for a steel-box workhorse that smelled like leaded gas and heavy-duty vinyl. With 23 colors in the catalog, GMC was leaning hard into the era's love affair with the great outdoors and disco-adjacent earth tones. You had "survivor" shades like Grecian Bronze and Saddle Metallic for the guys who wanted to blend into the woods, and high-visibility screams like Tangier Orange or Wheatland Yellow for the road crews and weekend warriors. It was a time when a truck was a tool, but with a coat of Catalina Blue Metallic, it was a tool that looked damn good in the driveway.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '77, the factory wasn't bothering with that fancy clear coat "sandwich" they use today. Your GMC was sprayed with a thick, honest layer of acrylic enamel or lacquer that carried the color and the shine in one go. The legend says this paint is bulletproof, but the reality is it's porous. Over forty-plus years, the sun has been "breathing" on that finish, leading to Oxidation. If your Skyline Blue looks more like a dusty chalkboard than a mountain lake, that's the pigment literally dying on the surface. Without the protection of a modern clear, the environment eats the gloss for breakfast, leaving behind a chalky, hazy residue that makes the truck look tired even if the engine is purring.

Restoration Tip

If you're working with original 1977 steel, remember the Salty Painter's creed: It needs wax or it dies. Because single-stage paint is essentially "open" to the elements, you can't just spray it and walk away for a decade. When you're repairing a spot with one of our 23 period-correct colors, you're adding fresh pigment to a thirsty surface. Once you've leveled your repair, you need to seal that paint with a high-quality Carnauba wax or a non-silicone sealant. This acts as a sacrificial barrier, keeping the oxygen from turning your fresh Rosedale Red into a dull pink. Treat it like a leather boot-keep it conditioned, keep it sealed, and that Square Body shine will outlast the next three generations of plastic trucks.
