How to Find Your 1978 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1978 GMC Background Info

The 1978 GMC Vibe

Welcome to 1978-the year the "Square Body" C/K trucks were ruling the job site and the campground alike. If you're looking at our list of 23 colors, you'll notice GMC wasn't shy about the palette. While the rest of the world was getting lost in disco lights, GMC was busy offering everything from the loud, punchy Tangier Orange and Hawaiian Blue to the deeply "70s" earth tones like Grecian Bronze and Medium Gold Metallic. This was the era of the bold utility vehicle, where your truck was either a bright signal flare in the woods or a metallic extension of the forest floor.

Paint Health Check

This is the heart of the Single Stage Era. Back then, GMC wasn't bothered with that "clear coat" sandwich tech you see today. Your color and your protection were mixed into one thick, honest layer of acrylic enamel or lacquer. The good news? That paint has more "meat" on the bone than a modern car. The bad news? It's thirsty. Without a protective layer on top, the sun eats the pigment for breakfast, leading to "Oxidation"-that chalky, white film that makes a Crimson Red hood look like an old pink chalkboard. If your 1978 GMC looks dull, it's not dead; it's just starving for maintenance.

Restoration Tip

If you're touching up a survivor or doing a partial respray, remember: single-stage paint needs a friend. Because the pigment is exposed directly to the elements, it will oxidize and "chalk" every single year if you let it. Before you apply your touch-up, you have to buff away that dead, oxidized layer to find the true color underneath-otherwise, you're just painting over dust. Once you're finished with the repair, it needs wax or it dies. A high-quality solvent-based wax or sealant is the only thing standing between your Midnight Black finish and a return to "Chalky Gray" by next summer.
