How to Find Your 1982 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1982 GMC Background Info

The 1982 GMC Vibe

1982 was the year of the workhorse. Whether you were piloting a C10 Squarebody, a Suburban hauling the whole neighborhood, or the brand-new S-Series that just hit the scene, these trucks were built with more iron than an anvil. The color palette shifted away from the "harvest gold" funk of the 70s toward a cleaner, more industrial look. In our database, we've tracked down the survivors of this era, focusing on the heavy hitters like Bright Red and the sophisticated Light Slate Metallic. These weren't just colors; they were a statement that you had a job to do and a GMC to do it in.

Paint Health Check

Since we're dealing with 1982, you're looking at the Single Stage Era. Back then, they didn't hide the color under a protective plastic shell of clear coat; the pigment was right there on the surface, fighting the elements alone. The biggest threat to your 1982 GMC isn't peeling-it's Oxidation. If your truck has spent any time in the sun, that Bright Red probably looks more like a dusty pink, and the Light Slate Metallic has likely turned into a chalky, flat gray. When the paint starts looking "thirsty" and develops that white, powdery film, that's the pigment literally dying from UV exposure.

Restoration Tip

Because this is a single-stage finish, you have a secret weapon that modern truck owners don't: you can actually "bring back" the dead. If there's still enough paint on the metal, a heavy compound and a high-speed buffer will shave off the oxidized top layer to reveal the fresh pigment underneath. But remember the Salty Painter's Golden Rule: It needs wax or it dies. Once you buff it, the pores of that old-school enamel are wide open. If you don't seal it immediately with a high-quality wax or sealant, the air will turn it back to chalk before the next oil change. Keep it greasy, keep it sealed, and it'll outlast the next three generations of "disposable" trucks.
