How to Find Your 1983 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1983 GMC Background Info

The 1983 GMC Vibe

Welcome to 1983-the year of the high-speed chase, the "Square Body" lifestyle, and the birth of the legendary S-Series. Whether you were hauling drywall in a C10-C30 Series, running a delivery route in a G-Series Vandura, or putting a Heavy Duty Medium Duty rig to work, your GMC was a tool, not a trophy. While the palette was full of earth tones back then, our records show that the one color truly meant for the survivors was Bright Red. It was the color of a truck that worked for a living and looked damn good doing it under the Friday night lights.

Paint Health Check

We are firmly in the Single Stage Era here. Back in '83, GMC wasn't bothering with those fussy clear coats on their workhorses. You've got thick, honest acrylic enamel. The good news? It doesn't "peel" or delaminate in sheets like the disaster-zone trucks of the 90s. The bad news? It's porous and it breathes. If your GMC has been sitting in the sun, it probably looks like a chalkboard by now. That "chalky" white haze is pure oxidation-the paint is literally drying out and dying of thirst. If it looks matte, it isn't "patina"; it's a cry for help.

Restoration Tip

Because this is a single-stage finish, you can actually bring it back from the dead-but you have to be careful. Use a light rubbing compound to shave off that oxidized "dead" top layer and reveal the Bright Red hiding underneath. But listen to me: It needs wax or it dies. Without a clear coat to protect it, that fresh red pigment is defenseless against the sun. Once you've polished it, seal it immediately with a high-quality carnuba or sealant. Think of it like skin-if you don't moisturize, it's going to crack and fade all over again.
