How to Find Your 1985 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1985 GMC Background Info

The 1985 GMC Vibe

Welcome to 1985-the year of big hair, synth-pop, and the absolute peak of the "Squarebody" C10-C30 Series. Whether you were hauling drywall in a G30 van, navigating tight city streets in the S-Series, or running a Medium Duty rig, you weren't looking for a fashion statement; you were looking for a tool. In our database, we've focused on the three heavy hitters that defined the GMC fleet that year: Bright Red, Tan, and the ever-present White. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the American workforce.

Paint Health Check

Now, let's talk shop. If you're looking at a 1985 GMC today, you're likely staring at the dawn of the "Peeling Era." This was right when the factory started moving away from the bulletproof single-stage paints of the '70s and into the early days of Basecoat/Clearcoat technology. The problem? The clear coat they used back then was about as reliable as a one-hit wonder. You'll recognize the "GMC Sunburn"-where the clear coat on the hood and roof starts to turn chalky, cracks, and eventually flakes off in sheets, leaving the base color exposed and defenseless. This delamination is the silent killer of 1980s trucks.

Restoration Tip

If you still have the original finish on that C10 or G-Van, your mantra is: Seal chips immediately. In the Peeling Era, a single rock chip is the front door for moisture and air to get under the clear coat. Once that clear starts to lift at the edges, it's a losing battle. If you spot a nick in your Bright Red or Tan finish, don't wait for the weekend. Clean it, dabbing it with a color match, and ensure the edges of the surrounding clear are sealed down tight. If the clear has already started to "curl," you'll need to carefully feather those edges back before applying your touch-up, or the new paint will just lift right off with the old failure.
