How to Find Your 1989 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1989 GMC Background Info

The 1989 GMC Vibe

By 1989, GMC was hitting its stride with the GMT400 platform, and the Sierra and Suburban were the undisputed kings of the suburban driveway and the muddy job site alike. Whether you were piloting a G30 Van or a compact S-Series, the aesthetic was strictly "work hard, look sharp." Our database for '89 captures the essentials-the heavy hitters like Bright Red, Silver Metallic, and Tan. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the late-80s American workforce. It was a time of transition, where trucks were starting to get fancy, but they still knew how to pull a stump out of the ground.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of The Peeling Era. In 1989, the industry was moving fast into basecoat/clearcoat systems, but the chemistry hadn't quite caught up to the ambition. If you're looking at your Sierra's hood and seeing what looks like a bad sunburn-sheets of clear coat flaking off to reveal a dull, chalky base underneath-you're dealing with classic delamination. GMC was experimenting with new primer-to-basecoat adhesion methods back then, and unfortunately, the sun usually won that fight. Those Silver Metallics and Whites are notorious for "lifting" once a single rock chip gives the elements a foothold.

Restoration Tip

If you've still got the original factory clear coat, your number one job is containment. The second you see a "nick" or a "star" in the clear, seal it immediately. Once oxygen and moisture get between that clear layer and the base color, the bond is compromised, and the clear will start to "walk" right off the panel. When touching up these 1989 survivors, feather your edges with a fine-grit abrasive more than you think you need to. You want a smooth transition so the new solvent-heavy layers can bite into the existing finish without causing further lifting.
