How to Find Your 1993 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1993 GMC Background Info

The 1993 GMC Vibe

1993 was the era of "Like a Rock," and if you were behind the wheel of a Full Size Pick-Up or a Suburban, you felt like you owned the pavement. This was the peak of the GMT400 platform-the "Obsidian" years-where the trucks finally got comfortable enough to be family haulers without losing their lunch-bucket grit. Our database focuses on the seven heavy hitters that actually survived the decade, featuring staples like Bright Red and Indigo Metallic. These weren't just colors; they were the uniform of the 90s American job site and the suburban driveway alike.

Paint Health Check

Welcome to the heart of The Peeling Era. By 1993, GMC had fully committed to the Basecoat/Clearcoat system, but the chemistry was still a bit like a bad marriage-sometimes they just didn't want to stay together. You might notice your clear coat lifting off the hood or roof in large, flaky sheets, a phenomenon we call "delamination." It starts looking like a bad sunburn, where the clear goes cloudy and then just... gives up. Once the clear lifts, the basecoat underneath is defenseless against the sun and will turn chalky faster than you can say "Jimmy."

Restoration Tip

In this era, a stone chip isn't just a blemish; it's an invitation for the clear coat to start a slow-motion exit from your sheet metal. The golden rule for 1993 paint is to seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you see a "halo" or a white edge around a chip, the delamination has already started. You'll want to very gently scuff the edges of that lifting clear with a fine-grit abrasive before applying your touch-up. This "feathers" the edge and gives the new paint a chance to lock down the perimeter, stopping the peel before your Suburban starts looking like a shedding snake.
