How to Find Your 1995 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1995 GMC Background Info

The 1995 GMC Vibe

Welcome to 1995, the absolute peak of the GMT400 era. Whether you were hauling the varsity team in a Suburban, loading drywall into a Full Size Pick-Up, or pretending the Safari wasn't a minivan, you were riding in a steel fortress. The color palette back then didn't mess around-we're talking deep Indigo Metallic and that unmistakable Bright Red that could be seen from three counties away. Our database tracks 7 of the heavy hitters from this year, including the legendary Silver Metallic and the "workhorse" White. It was a time when the trucks were bulletproof, even if the clear coat had some serious commitment issues.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a '95 GMC today, you're likely dealing with the "Great Delamination." This was the heart of The Peeling Era. Back in the shop, we call it the "GM Sunburn." See, by 1995, the factory had fully embraced the basecoat/clearcoat system, but the bond between that shiny top layer and the primer wasn't always a happy marriage. If you see white or silver "islands" where the clear coat has flaked off to reveal a dull, chalky base underneath, you've got delamination. Once the clear lifts, the sun starts eating the color coat for breakfast, and it won't be long before you're looking at bare metal and the inevitable North American rust crawl.

Restoration Tip

When you're touching up a 1995 GMC, speed is your only friend. Because this era is prone to "sheeting"-where the paint lifts off in giant flakes-you have to seal every chip immediately. If you see a small nick, don't wait for the weekend. Moisture gets under the edge of that clear coat and acts like a pry bar, lifting the finish from the inside out. Sand the edges of the chip lightly to "feather" the transition, apply your color, and for the love of the craft, use a quality clear coat to lock it down. You aren't just fixing a scratch; you're stopping a landslide.
