How to Find Your 1997 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1997 GMC Background Info

The 1997 GMC Vibe

Welcome to 1997, the year the Suburban and Yukon officially became the kings of the suburban driveway and the Full Size Pick-Up was the undisputed backbone of the job site. Back then, GMC wasn't just building trucks; they were building mobile fortresses. Our database focuses on the 9 "hall of famer" shades that defined this era-from the deep, moody Indigo Metallic to the quintessential 90s Smokey Carmel Metallic. Whether you were hauling a trailer with a Savana or navigating a Sonoma through a tight parking lot, these colors weren't just paint; they were a statement of "Professional Grade" capability.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a 1997 GMC today, you're likely staring at a victim of "The Peeling Era." This was the height of the delamination disaster. See that white flake on the hood of your Jimmy or the roof of your Safari? That's not just a chip; it's a clear coat failure. In the late 90s, the bond between the primer and that shiny top layer was often about as strong as a New Year's resolution. Once the sun gets a grip on a small rock chip, the clear coat starts to lift and peel in sheets like a bad sunburn, leaving the basecoat underneath exposed, chalky, and defenseless.

Restoration Tip

For a 1997 rig, the secret isn't just "daubing on some paint"-it's containment. If you see a chip, you have to seal it immediately before the clear coat decides to "migrate" off the panel. Use a fine-grit sandpaper to very gently feather back any "lifting" edges of the clear coat until you hit a spot where it's still stuck tight. Only then should you apply your touch-up layers. If you just paint over a loose edge, the clear coat will keep lifting underneath your repair, and you'll be doing the whole job over again by next summer. Seal the edges, protect the base, and keep that metallic depth alive.
