How to Find Your 1998 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1998 GMC Background Info

The 1998 GMC Vibe

Welcome to 1998, the high-water mark for the "Professional Grade" GMC lifestyle. Whether you were hauling the whole soccer team in a Suburban or running a Sonoma into the ground at the job site, 1998 was about big steel and even bigger presence. Our database tracks 8 iconic shades for this year, from the workhorse White and Tan to the quintessential 90s swagger of Indigo Metallic and Smokey Carmel Metallic. We even keep a bead on Medium Argent Metallic, specifically for those heavy-duty bumpers. It was an era of variety-where a Safari van could look just as sharp in Medium Red Metallic as a Yukon did in Bright Red.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a 1998 GMC today, you're likely staring at the poster child for "The Peeling Era." This was the height of the delamination crisis. Back then, the factory was moving fast, and sometimes the bond between the basecoat and the clear coat was more of a "polite suggestion" than a permanent marriage. If your hood or roof looks like it's suffering from a bad sunburn with white, flaky patches, that's clear coat failure. Once that top layer lets go, the pigment underneath is defenseless. You aren't just fighting 1990s UV rays; you're fighting a clock that started ticking the day the truck rolled off the line.

Restoration Tip

In this era, speed is your best friend. You have to seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. If you see a small rock chip in your Indigo Metallic door, don't "wait until spring" to fix it. Moisture gets under the edge of the clear coat, freezes or heats up, and starts the delamination process. When you're repairing these spots, use a fine-grit paper to "feather" the edges of the peeling clear until they are smooth against the basecoat before applying your touch-up. If you don't level those edges, your new paint will just sit on top of a "cliff" of old clear coat, and it'll eventually peel away like a scab. Build your layers slowly, and always finish with a high-solids clear to give that old pigment the UV shield it never truly had.
