How to Find Your 1999 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

1999 GMC Background Info

The 1999 GMC Vibe

Nineteen-ninety-nine was a hell of a year. We were all bracing for Y2K to turn our computers into paperweights, but GMC was too busy moving the goalposts. This was the year the Yukon Denali first started showing the world that a rugged truck could actually have a soft interior, while the Sonoma and Safari were still out there doing the real heavy lifting. Our database tracks 10 specific shades from this vintage, ranging from the fleet-standard White to the more adventurous Indigo Metallic and that "end-of-the-century" Smokey Carmel Metallic. It's a palette that perfectly captured that moment when trucks stopped being just tools and started being status symbols. We even keep the Sparkle Silver Metallic on hand-because your wheels shouldn't look like they've spent twenty years in a salt bath if the rest of the truck looks like a million bucks.

Paint Health Check

Listen, kid, if you're driving a GMC from this era, you're living in The Peeling Era. By '99, the factory was fully committed to the basecoat-plus-clearcoat system, and while it looked deep and glossy on the showroom floor, it had a nasty habit of "delamination." You've seen it: that ugly white haze on the roof of a Suburban or a Full Size Pick-Up where the clear coat starts flaking off in sheets like a bad sunburn after a week in Cabo. Once that clear starts lifting away from the Indigo Metallic or Dark Bronzemist base, you're not just looking at a cosmetic issue-you're looking at a ticking clock. Without that clear shield, the metallic pigments underneath will oxidize and disappear faster than your Y2K fears.

Restoration Tip

Here's the deal: with 1999 paint, you have to seal chips immediately before the clear lifts. That clear coat is like a giant sticker; once air and moisture get under a tiny stone chip, they'll start prying the clear away from the color coat until half your hood is bald. Don't wait for "later." If you see a nick on your Jimmy or Savana, hit it with a touch-up pen or a brush right away. You're not just fixing a spot; you're anchoring the rest of the clear coat to the truck so it doesn't decide to migrate.
