How to Find Your 2002 GMC's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

2002 GMC Background Info

The 2002 GMC Vibe

Welcome to 2002-the year GMC decided every driveway in suburbia needed a Yukon Denali or an Envoy with enough chrome to blind a low-flying pilot. It was a time of transition. We were moving away from the flat teals of the 90s and diving headfirst into heavy metallics and high-end finishes. With 14 colors in the rotation, GMC was catering to everyone from the fleet manager ordering a sea of Savana vans in work-truck White to the guy splurging on the White Diamond Pri Metallic Tri-coat. You had the rugged Sonoma and Safari keeping things practical, but the palette-featuring hits like Indigo Metallic and Dark Bronzemist Metallic-was pure early-2000s "luxury-truck" swagger.

Paint Health Check

If you're looking at a 2002 factory finish today, you're likely staring at the poster child for the Peeling Era. This was the peak of "Delamination." Between the new high-solids clear coats and the primers of the day, the bond between the color and the protection was... let's just say, temperamental. On the hood and roof of your Full Size Pick-Up or Suburban, that clear coat doesn't just fade-it quits. It starts as a small "halo" around a rock chip and eventually peels off in sheets like a bad sunburn. If you've got one of the metallics, like Smokey Carmel or Medium Green, the sun is your biggest enemy; once that clear goes, the metallic basecoat underneath oxidizes faster than a cheap shovel in a rainstorm.

Restoration Tip

In this era, a rock chip isn't just an eyesore; it's an entry point for disaster. The moment you see a nick in the clear coat, you are on a ticking clock. Seal it immediately. If you let moisture and air get between that basecoat and the clear, the delamination will spread like a wildfire. Use a high-quality solvent-based touch-up to fill the void and "glue" the edges of the remaining clear coat down. For those with the White Diamond Tri-coat, don't try to shortcut it with a single-stage blob; that finish relies on the depth of the layers to catch the light, so take your time and build it back up properly.
