How to Find Your GMC Suburban's Color Code

GMC placed paint codes in many different locations, making them difficult to find, and GM did not standardize the color plate location across makes and models. Codes are often found in the glove box or the spare tire well; otherwise they could be elsewhere. Typical format: 51/WA316N, usually preceded by BC/CC (e.g., BC/CC 51 or BC/CC 316N). Two-tone entries may use U or L for Upper or Lower (e.g., BC/CC U316N or BC/CC L316N).

The Color Breakdown

GMC didn't hold back with the Suburban, giving us 92 recorded colors to keep this rolling cathedral looking sharp. They really went for it over the years, offering everything from the bold Tangier Orange and Raspberry Metallic to the sophisticated Black Sapphire Metallic. Whether you're driving a workhorse in Wheatland Yellow or a family cruiser in Pewter Metallic, the Suburban has a lot of "skin" in the game, and most of it is draped in those high-flake metallics that catch the sun just right.

What to Watch For

Because the Suburban is essentially a small apartment building on wheels, it has massive horizontal surfaces that live under the sun all day. Keep a close eye on the hood and the roof; these models are well-known for the "GM Peel," where the clear coat can start to bubble or flake off in small sections. Before you start dabbing, you need your "secret recipe" code. Head to the passenger side and open the glove box. You're looking for a white or silver "Service Parts Identification" sticker. Look for a code at the bottom that starts with "WA"-that's the DNA of your paint.

Driveway Repair Tip

Since so many Suburban colors-like Indigo Metallic or Dark Toreador Metallic-are packed with metallic flakes, your touch-up bottle is basically a tiny snow globe. Shake that bottle for at least 60 seconds to wake up the sparkles; otherwise, the color will look flat. When you apply it, don't try to be a hero and fill the whole chip at once. Use the tip of the brush to place a tiny drop in the center and let it flow to the edges. Light layers are always better than one thick blob. If the chip is deep, let it dry for 20 minutes and come back for a second pass. This requires patience, but it's the secret to a repair that disappears into the bodywork.
