How to Find Your 1998 Harley-Davidson's Color Code

A color code is unlikely to appear on a Harley Davidson; often only the color name is listed. The code can be determined by Harley-Davidson. If there is no color code, the relevant reference is the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) paint formula number. Finding a code on the bike is uncommon, so identification typically relies on Harley-Davidson or, failing a code, the PPG or Dupont (Axalta) formula.

1998 Harley-Davidson Background Info

The 1998 Harley-Davidson Vibe

Welcome to 1998-the twilight of the legendary Evolution engine and the year everyone was humping a leather vest while "Iris" played on every radio station from Milwaukee to Modesto. If you were on a Harley that year, whether it was a Fat Boy or a Sportster, you weren't looking for a neon light show. You were looking for the void. We've focused our database on the ultimate survivor from that era: Vivid Black. In 1998, Harley knew that while other manufacturers were busy experimenting with "Teal" and "Champagne" on their cruisers, the only color that truly mattered was the one that looked like a pool of oil in a dark garage.

Paint Health Check

By 1998, the factory had moved fully into the basecoat/clearcoat era, but we were still smack in the middle of what I call "The Peeling Era." The solvent-based technology was robust, but it had a nasty habit of "delaminating" once it hit its twentieth birthday. If your '98 hasn't been kept in a climate-controlled bubble, you're likely seeing the "Clear Coat Ghost"-that milky white lifting where the top layer decides it's done holding onto the color coat. On these bikes, keep a sharp eye on the fuel filler neck and the fender edges; gas spills and vibration are the natural enemies of 90s clear, and once the air gets under that shell, it'll peel faster than a sunburned tourist.

Restoration Tip

The secret to keeping Vivid Black from looking like a chalkboard is immediate intervention. Because we're dealing with a clear coat system, a simple rock chip isn't just a cosmetic blemish-it's a gateway for moisture to start the delamination process. Seal your chips immediately. If you see a nick, don't wait for the weekend. Clean it, dabs some fresh paint in there, and seal it up before the clear coat decides to start lifting at the edges. Also, stop dry-wiping your tank with a crusty shop rag; this paint is softer than a poet's heart and will swirl if you even look at it sideways.
